Maa Kaalratri Story (7th Day of Navratri)

According to legend, during the devastation created by the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, Goddess Parvati took the incarnation of Kalaratri Devi. It is said that these two demons attacked Devloka. Demons Shumbh-Nishumbh and Raktabeej had created hue and cry in all three loka. Worried about this, all the deities went to Lord Shiva. Shiva asked Goddess Parvati to kill the demons and protect her devotees.

By obeying Lord Shiva, Parvati took the form of Durga and killed Shumbha-Nishumbha. But as soon as Durga killed Raktabeej, millions of Raktabeej were generated from the blood that came out of his body. Seeing this, Durga ji made Kalratri with her glory. After this, when Durga killed Raktabeej, Kaalratri filled his blood in her mouth and killed Raktabeej by slitting his throat. It is said that he licked the blood of the demon Rakta Bija, who had the ability to create more demons from his blood.
