The seventh form of Navdurga is Maa Kalratri. She is also referred to as Goddess Shubhankari.
“Kalaratri” means scourge of darkness or enemy of darkness. Her complexion is dark black with bountiful hair. Durga hairs are unlocked. She has put on necklaces shining like lightning. Thousands of flames of fire come out while breathing from the nose. There is a sharp sword in her right hand. She rides on Sheva (dead body). This avatar is depicted as a destructive form of the Goddess.
She has 3 eyes which are like the universe. She has 4 hands, 2 clutching a cleaver and a torch, while the remaining 2 are in the mudras of “giving” and “protecting”. The burning torch (mashal) is in her left hand and her lower left hand is in fearless style, by which she makes her devotees fearless. The positioning of her hands is in abhaya and varada mudra and she carries a sword and an iron hook in her left hand.
She can be seen riding a dark black donkey. Maa Kalratri’s famous shrine is in Calcutta. Navratri 7th night is worshipped to Maa Kalratri
Navratri’s seventh day is worshipped for destroying ignorance and removing darkness from the universe. Maha Saptami(7th day) marks the major day of rituals for the goddess of power.
According to legend, during the devastation created by the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, Goddess Parvati took the incarnation of Kalaratri Devi. It is said that these two demons attacked Devloka. Demons Shumbh-Nishumbh and Raktabeej had created hue and cry in all three loka. Worried about this, all the deities went to Lord Shiva. Shiva asked Goddess Parvati to kill the demons and protect her devotees.
By obeying Lord Shiva, Parvati took the form of Durga and killed Shumbha-Nishumbha. But as soon as Durga killed Raktabeej, millions of Raktabeej were generated from the blood that came out of his body. Seeing this, Durga ji made Kalratri with her glory. After this, when Durga killed Raktabeej, Kaalratri filled his blood in her mouth and killed Raktabeej by slitting his throat. It is said that he licked the blood of the demon Rakta Bija, who had the ability to create more demons from his blood.
