Ramnagar Fort – Varanasi

Ramnagar Fort is one of the main forts in Varanasi. Ramnagar Fort is located in Ramnagar of Varanasi. It is situated opposite Tulsi Ghat on the eastern bank of the river Ganges. It was built in 1750 by Kashi Naresh Balwant Singh. It is made of butter-coloured sandstone of Chunar.

Ramnagar Fort Museum

The most attractive place of the fort is the Ramnagar Fort Museum. It is also known as Saraswati Bhavan. The Museum of Ramnagar Fort houses a wide collection of artifacts related to the Maharaja of Banaras. In the museum, the remains of unusual palanquins studded with gold and silver, rare astronomical clocks, old guns brought from Africa, pictures of the king, old cars of America, royal clothes (kinkwa silk), swords, etc. will be seen.

Earlier the premises of the fort used to be the place to organize any kind of cultural events. Recently, Ramlila was organized near the fort on the occasion of Dussehra. Even today Kashi Naresh is a famous personality in this region. Although in today’s time, many programs are no longer organized here, some devotees still visit the Ved Vyas temple located on the premises during the festival in January and February. Raj Mangal is one of the oldest festivals held on campus. At present, the fort of Ramnagar has also become a favorite shooting spot.

Chunar Fort – Varanasi

The Chunar Fort is located on the banks of the Ganges and is 40 km from the city in Mirzapur District. The fort is 34000 square feet wide and it is famous for its abundance. The fort was built by Ujjain King Vikramaditya for his brother Bharati. The fort has historical significance and it served as an important post during the war between Humayun and Sher Shah. It was under the control of various rulers and the last of the rulers to control the fort was the East India Company.

Alamgir Mosque, Varanasi

In a list filled with temples, the Alamgir Mosque stands proudly as a representation of the Muslims who have lived here for centuries. Renowned for its incredible Islamic architecture, this mosque is unique in that it is located on the banks of the Ganges. 

It is believed that it was built by the Mughal Sultan Aurangzeb who was Akbar’s grandfather. Emperor Aurangzeb’s other name was Alamgir, which is why this mosque is called. Historically, it has been noticed that Aurangzeb was responsible for demolishing a temple for the construction of the mosque. Nevertheless, the mosque retains many Hindu influences as seen in its unique architecture and art.
